Three health shots to start your day right, from nutritionists

Experts unanimously agree that starting your day right holds immense value. While the definition of “right” may vary for everyone, it’s the habits shaping our daily lives—from exercising to simply making our beds—that can determine the success of the day ahead.

Beyond sleep quality, our diet significantly influences how we feel during the day. Fluctuations in blood sugar levels can affect our mood, making a balanced breakfast (or fasting, if that suits you) crucial. Additionally, other nutritional boosters can help establish a healthy mindset before diving into daily activities.

For me, it’s a health “shot.” Earlier this year, I wrote about my newfound ritual of drinking apple cider vinegar every morning. Nutritionists helped balance blood sugar levels and counteract sugar spikes from carb-rich meals, making it an effective routine in a unique small glass, helping stave off hunger between meals.

There are other fantastic shots to try. I’m not talking about prefabricated items available at local food chains—check labels, as many contain added sugars and provide minimal health benefits. Homemade blends are much better, and though they won’t completely transform your health, they serve as a great ritual.

Here are three expert-approved shots worth trying now.

Three Healthy Shot Recipes to Try Immediately

Matcha

Are you a coffee enthusiast? Why not try a cup of matcha? “I am a staunch supporter of matcha because it contains L-theanine and caffeine,” says nutritionist Eve Kalinik. “L-theanine helps mitigate the effects of caffeine, aiding in staying calm and focused, without the jitteriness associated with coffee.” It also contains an antioxidant called EGCG, with anti-inflammatory properties, potentially supporting cognitive health.

To get the most nutritional value from green tea, opt for “ceremonial” matcha, of higher quality than cooking-grade matcha. “My preferred choice is Lalani & Co, and I also like Ancient & Brave’s collagen and lion’s mane blend for additional cognitive benefits.

Ginger and Lemon

In addition to being anti-inflammatory, ginger and lemon boast powerful antioxidant properties, promoting a healthy digestive system, hydration, nausea prevention, and immune system enhancement. This duo is said to help reduce the risk of cardiovascular and liver diseases. While you can infuse them for hydration, they create a vibrant, invigorating shot that quickly energizes body and mind.

“I mix a large piece of fresh ginger with some fresh lemon juice and a little water (just enough to mix), then put it in the fridge—it can last for a few days,” says nutritionist, naturopath, and Artah founder Rhian Stephenson. “In the morning, I shoot a glass, and it’s quite invigorating. Especially brilliant in winter.”

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

Apple cider vinegar remains one of the hottest ingredients throughout the year, offering benefits for digestion, blood sugar management, and bloating. It also possesses antibacterial properties. ACV with “the mother” is said to have probiotic abilities, beneficial for gut health when injected in the morning. Just mix one to two tablespoons with a little water. Always ensure more water intake post-shot to prevent enamel erosion. I prefer Willy’s Apple Cider Vinegar with Turmeric and Eureka Lemon for additional anti-inflammatory effects.
